The Principles of Landscape Design

While landscape designs come in many shapes and forms, there are principles which are universal that need to be understood to achieve a plan that is pleasing to the eye. Your landscape is an essential part of your property, and you want to make sure you make a great first impression. A landscape design that takes all of these factors into account will be sure to provide you with beauty for years to come.

Proportion

When it comes to any design, proportion, and scale are extremely important, and this is true in landscape design. Essential to consider is the relationship between your hardscape and your plants. It's important to take your property and house into account when designing your landscape so that everything can work together to achieve a look that's pleasing to the eye.

Balance

Achieving a sense of balance is essential if you want to design the landscape of your dreams. So much of what we perceive as beautiful is related to symmetry. This is true in landscaping as well. A landscape or garden that is symmetrical will give off an elegant and classical vibe. Asymmetrical landscaping designs can look great as well, but it takes a keen and experienced eye to make sure that all the elements still work together to achieve a sense of balance.

Repetition

Never underestimate the importance of repetition in landscape design. If you want to achieve a stunning landscape, it's important to make sure that it's not a mess of various elements working against each other. When you use similar elements throughout your entire landscaping design, it leaves an impression of order and togetherness.

Unity

Giving your entire property a sense of unity is an essential part of our work as a landscaping company. It's not enough for the individual elements of your landscape to look great. It has to form a collective whole that works well together. This can be achieved in a variety of ways. Perhaps your landscape has or will have a focal point, such as a large tree or plant. This can become the center of your landscape design, with everything else working around it. It's also very common to use plants in groupings of threes or other odd numbers to give the viewer a sense of balance and unity. This is partly because odd numbers can't be easily split into groups, unlike even numbers.

Simplicity

Many beginning landscape architects underestimate the importance of simplicity in design. When taken as a whole, your landscape should give a sense of beauty and serenity. You don't want clutter getting in the way, as this will ruin any effect you're going for. Especially with large properties, it can be easy to get caught up in adding details. However, failing to look at the big picture will result in a landscape that is instead chaotic and stress-inducing.
